Redbelly Toad
Melanophryniscus stelzneri
The adult redbelly toad lives on land in open grassland, rocky ground, and scrub, returning to temporary pools to breed after rain. It hunts small ants, mites, and other tiny invertebrates with rapid tongue strikes. Its vivid red-and-black warning colours advertise defensive skin chemicals that discourage predators.
