Black-headed Monitor
Varanus tristis

Black-headed monitors inhabit open woodland, scrub, and rocky country across much of northern Australia. They climb readily and forage through bark, hollows, and crevices for insects, spiders, lizards, eggs, and small vertebrates. When threatened, they can flatten against a branch or trunk and rely on their cryptic markings to remain unnoticed.
