Red Crossbill
Loxia curvirostra

Red Crossbills inhabit conifer forests, especially where spruce, pine, or fir cones are abundant. They travel through the canopy in mobile flocks, using their crossed bill tips to pry apart cone scales and extract seeds. Adults may breed at unusual times of year whenever cone crops are plentiful. Their specialized bill can vary in size between populations according to the cones they feed on.
