Brown-banded Bamboo Shark

Chiloscyllium punctatum

Brown-banded Bamboo Shark

Brown-banded bamboo sharks inhabit shallow tropical coral reefs, lagoons, and sandy bottoms across the Indo-Pacific. They rest in crevices by day and forage at night, using their small jaws to take worms, crustaceans, and other bottom-dwelling invertebrates. Young sharks have bold dark bands that provide camouflage, while adults become more mottled with dark spots. This species can survive brief exposure to low oxygen in tide pools and may wriggle through very shallow water between pools.
