Highveld Crag Lizard
Pseudocordylus melanotus
The Highveld crag lizard lives on rocky slopes, koppies, and stone-strewn grassland in southern Africa. It forages actively for insects and other small invertebrates, but retreats rapidly into tight rock crevices when disturbed. Its heavily keeled, armor-like scales help protect it from attacks and abrasion among the rocks. This species is well adapted to squeezing into refuges too narrow for many predators to follow.
