Mute Swan Cygnet
Cygnus olor (cygnet)

A Mute Swan cygnet is a downy grey juvenile that stays close to sheltered lakes, ponds, and slow rivers. It feeds on soft aquatic plants, algae, and small invertebrates picked from the water surface or shallows. At this stage it relies heavily on camouflage, staying near its parents and flattening low when danger approaches. Its bill is dark rather than the adult’s bright orange, and it cannot yet match the adult’s strength or flight ability.
