Bufflehead
Bucephala albeola

Buffleheads breed on wooded freshwater ponds and winter along sheltered coasts, lakes, and estuaries. They are active diving ducks that pursue aquatic insects, crustaceans, mollusks, and small fish beneath the surface. Adults often disappear underwater abruptly when alarmed, using a rapid dive to evade danger. This compact duck commonly nests in tree cavities, including old woodpecker holes.
