Red-breasted Merganser
Mergus serrator
Red-breasted Mergansers inhabit coastal seas, estuaries, large lakes, and rivers, especially in northern regions. They are agile diving ducks that chase fish underwater, gripping prey with narrow bills lined by backward-pointing serrations. During courtship, males perform elaborate head and body displays while raising their shaggy crests.
