Diana Fritillary
Speyeria diana

Adult Diana fritillaries fly through rich deciduous forests, woodland borders, and flower-filled openings in the southeastern United States. They drink nectar from blooms such as milkweeds, thistles, and ironweeds, while females search for violets on which to lay eggs. Males are striking orange-and-black, whereas females are usually darker with pale blue markings. The species is among the largest and most distinctive fritillary butterflies in its range.
