Common Sweep
Psyche casta

Adult Common Sweeps occur around hedgerows, woodland edges, and other vegetation-rich habitats where their larvae can find host plants. The short-lived males fly in search of mates, while the wingless females remain concealed within their larval silk cases to mate and lay eggs. Adults generally do not feed, relying on reserves accumulated during the leaf-eating caterpillar stage. A notable feature of this species is its extreme sexual dimorphism: the mobile male resembles a small moth, whereas the female remains grub-like and case-bound.
