Silvery Field Ant
Formica argentea

Silvery Field Ants inhabit dry prairie, steppe, and open field habitats, nesting in soil beneath stones or among grass roots. Individual workers travel quickly over exposed ground while searching for small insects, dead animals, and sweet honeydew. They defend themselves with sharp mandibles and formic-acid secretions. Fine pale hairs give the adult a distinctly silvery sheen in sunlight.
