Edith's Checkerspot Caterpillar
Occidryas editha (caterpillar)
This caterpillar lives in open grasslands, coastal bluffs, and mountain clearings where its host plants grow. It feeds chiefly on leaves of plantains and paintbrushes, often basking before feeding in cool weather. Its dark, spiny body and chemicals obtained from host plants help make it unappealing to predators.
