Western Seedcorn Beetle
Anisodactylus merula

This dark ground beetle patrols crop fields, grasslands, and field edges, usually staying close to the ground. It feeds on weed seeds as well as small invertebrates it can catch with its mandibles. Adults are most active at night and readily shelter beneath stones, plant litter, or soil clods by day. Its appetite for seeds can help reduce weeds in agricultural habitats.
