Guyana Caiman Lizard
Dracaena guianensis
The adult Guyana caiman lizard inhabits slow rivers, swamps, and seasonally flooded rainforest across northern South America. A strong swimmer, it often dives from branches or banks to escape threats and searches the water’s edge for freshwater snails. Its enlarged, crushing jaws can break open snail shells, while its heavily armored scales provide notable protection.
