Varanus caspius
Varanus caspius
The adult Caspian monitor ranges through open scrub, river margins, and rocky terrain, sheltering in burrows and crevices. It actively searches for rodents, birds, eggs, reptiles, and carrion, overpowering prey with its jaws and claws. When cornered, it hisses, inflates its body, and lashes with its long tail. Its forked tongue carries chemical cues to a sensory organ in the roof of its mouth.
