Black-and-gold Flat Millipede
Apheloria virginiensis
This flat-backed millipede lives in moist deciduous forests, usually beneath leaf litter, logs, and loose bark. It feeds chiefly on decaying leaves and other dead plant material, helping return nutrients to the soil. When disturbed, it coils tightly and releases a pungent defensive chemical; its bold black-and-yellow pattern warns potential predators to leave it alone.
