Plain-bellied Water Snake
Nerodia erythrogaster
Adult plain-bellied water snakes inhabit wetlands, floodplains, ponds, and sluggish waterways, but may travel over land between water bodies. They actively hunt fish, frogs, salamanders, and crayfish, seizing prey with their jaws and swallowing it whole. Though nonvenomous, they may bite defensively and release a pungent musk when cornered.
