Japanese Fire-bellied Newt
Cynops pyrrhogaster
Adults inhabit ponds, marshes, rice paddies, and nearby damp woodland across Japan. They forage for worms, insects, crustaceans, and other small animals, often returning to water to breed. Their bright orange-red belly warns predators of toxic skin secretions.
