Yabby
Cherax destructor

Yabbies are freshwater crayfish found in rivers, ponds, farm dams, and temporary pools across much of southeastern Australia. They feed opportunistically on algae, plant material, detritus, and small aquatic animals, using their claws to handle food and defend themselves. During drought or cold conditions, they excavate deep burrows that may reach the water table. Their hard exoskeleton is shed periodically as they grow, leaving them briefly soft and vulnerable after moulting.
