Reef Stonefish
Synanceia verrucosa
The adult reef stonefish rests among coral rubble, sand, and rocky reef bottoms in tropical coastal waters. It ambushes small fish and crustaceans that come within reach of its broad mouth. Venomous dorsal spines deliver a powerful defense when the fish is disturbed or stepped on.
