Arboreal Salamander
Aneides lugubris

The arboreal salamander lives in moist oak woodlands, redwood forests, and shaded canyons along coastal California and Baja California. It spends much of its time beneath loose bark, in tree hollows, and among rotting logs, climbing with broad toe pads and a prehensile tail. At night it hunts small insects, spiders, and other invertebrates. When threatened, it may raise its body, open its mouth in a defensive display, and deliver a strong bite.
