Northern Pocket Gopher
Thomomys talpoides

Northern pocket gophers inhabit grasslands, shrublands, and mountain meadows, spending most of their lives in extensive underground tunnels. They feed chiefly on roots, tubers, stems, and other underground plant parts, pulling vegetation down from tunnel openings when possible. Solitary adults use powerful foreclaws and large incisors to excavate soil, while fur-lined external cheek pouches carry food through their burrows.
