Alpine Salamander
Salamandra atra

Alpine salamanders inhabit cool, damp alpine forests, meadows, and rocky slopes across central and southern Europe. They spend much of the day concealed beneath stones, logs, or leaf litter, emerging in wet weather and at night to hunt small invertebrates such as worms, slugs, and insects. Their glossy black skin releases irritating toxic secretions that discourage predators. Unlike most salamanders, females give birth to fully developed young rather than laying eggs in water.
