Black Lion Tamarin
Leontopithecus chrysopygus
Black lion tamarins inhabit fragmented Atlantic Forest woodland in São Paulo state, Brazil, spending most of their time high in trees. Agile climbers and leapers, they search bark, leaves, and crevices for insects, fruit, nectar, and small prey. They use calls and scent marks to communicate and defend their home range. Their striking black coat and golden rump make this endangered primate especially distinctive.
