West African Mud Turtle
Pelusios castaneus

Adults inhabit freshwater pools, swamps, marshes, and quiet river edges across West Africa. They are mostly aquatic and forage for insects, mollusks, fish, carrion, and plant material, often hunting from cover in murky water. A hinged section of the lower shell helps protect the head and forelimbs when the turtle withdraws.
