Smooth Periwinkle
Echinolittorina placida
Adult smooth periwinkles live on wave-washed rocks in the intertidal zone, tolerating periods of exposure between tides. They graze films of algae and microbes from hard surfaces with a rasping radula. The tough spiral shell and operculum help reduce water loss and protect the snail from predators.
