Black Harrier
Circus maurus

The Black Harrier hunts over open grasslands, fynbos, wetlands, and agricultural fields of southern Africa. It flies low over vegetation, using keen sight to locate rodents, small birds, reptiles, and large insects. Prey is seized with strong talons after a sudden drop or short dive. This striking raptor is largely endemic to southern Africa and often nests directly on the ground in thick vegetation.
