Springtail
Pogonognathellus longicornis

Pogonognathellus longicornis is a tiny, long-antennaed springtail found in damp leaf litter, rotting wood, moss, and beneath bark. It feeds chiefly on fungi, algae, decaying plant material, and microscopic organic films. When disturbed, it snaps a forked abdominal organ called the furcula against the ground, launching itself away in a rapid jump. Its mottled body coloring helps it disappear among soil and decomposing vegetation.
