Spanish Ribbed Newt
Pleurodeles waltl

Adult Spanish ribbed newts live mostly in ponds, marshes, irrigation channels, and other calm freshwater habitats, though they may shelter on land during dry periods. They prowl the bottom or vegetation for worms, insects, crustaceans, tadpoles, and other small animals. When threatened, they can arch their body and force sharp ribs through poisonous skin glands as a formidable defense. Their broad, flattened tail provides steady propulsion in the water.
