Sprawler Caterpillar
Asteroscopus sphinx (caterpillar)
This caterpillar lives on woody vines and shrubs in woodland edges and thickets of eastern North America. It feeds chiefly at night, chewing leaves of grape and peppervine while resting along stems by day. Its mottled body blends with bark and foliage, and it can rear up to expose large eyespots that make it resemble a small snake.
