Eastern Fox Squirrel Kit
Sciurus niger (kit)
Young Eastern Fox Squirrel kits are born in tree cavities or leafy nests, where they remain hidden and dependent on their mother for warmth and milk. As they grow, they begin climbing around the nest tree and practicing short jumps before foraging on their own. Their early diet shifts from milk to soft plant foods, buds, and small pieces of nuts or seeds. A notable juvenile trait is their rapid improvement in balance, which prepares them for an arboreal life.
