Testudo houzei
Testudo houzei

Testudo houzei was a large extinct tortoise of Madagascar, probably occupying dry woodland, scrub, and open forest habitats. It would have browsed on grasses, fallen fruit, leaves, and other low-growing vegetation, moving slowly between feeding areas. Its heavy domed shell offered strong protection, while adults could shove rivals or threats with the front of the shell. Fossil remains indicate that it was among the island's substantial terrestrial herbivores before its extinction.
