Hippocampus sarmaticus
Hippocampus sarmaticus

Hippocampus sarmaticus was a small extinct seahorse that lived in the shallow coastal waters of the Miocene Paratethys Sea. It likely sheltered among seagrass, algae, or other submerged vegetation, using its curled tail to anchor itself against currents. Like living seahorses, it probably fed by rapidly sucking tiny crustaceans and other planktonic prey through its long snout. Its fossils are among the oldest known evidence of true seahorses.
