Paleovespa menatensis
Paleovespa menatensis

Paleovespa menatensis was a fossil wasp from the Paleocene forests of what is now central France. Adults flew among vegetation, likely taking nectar and hunting small insects to feed themselves or provision developing young. As in many wasps, a narrow waist and strong jaws would have aided prey handling, while a sting provided a close-range defense.
