Varanus prisca
Varanus prisca

Varanus prisca was a gigantic extinct monitor lizard that inhabited Pleistocene Australia in open woodland, scrub, and forest-edge habitats. It was an active terrestrial predator, likely stalking and ambushing large mammals and other available prey with its powerful limbs and jaws. Like living monitor lizards, it probably relied on a keen sense of smell, flicking its tongue to sample chemical trails. It is often called Megalania and may have been the largest land lizard ever known.
