Rove Beetle
Philonthus politus
Adult rove beetles patrol damp leaf litter, compost, carrion, and other decaying habitats. They are active predators that seize small insects and larvae with their powerful mandibles. Their very short wing covers leave much of the flexible abdomen exposed, though folded flight wings are tucked beneath them.
