Panthera zdanskyi
Panthera zdanskyi
Panthera zdanskyi inhabited Early Pleistocene woodlands and open, brushy country in what is now northern China. This ambush predator likely stalked deer and other medium-sized hoofed mammals before closing in with a short pounce. Its notably elongated upper canine teeth foreshadow the specialized saber-toothed cats that appeared later.
