Melanoplus spretus
Melanoplus spretus

The adult Rocky Mountain locust historically occupied grasslands and river valleys of western North America. It eats a broad range of grasses and herbaceous plants, travelling readily in search of fresh food. Fully developed wings allow rapid flight and long-distance movement when conditions are favorable. This now-extinct species was once responsible for vast, destructive locust outbreaks.
