Varanus rusingensis
Varanus rusingensis

Varanus rusingensis was a large monitor lizard that lived in early Miocene eastern Africa, with fossils known from Rusinga Island in Kenya. It likely prowled wooded and more open habitats near ancient lakes and rivers, hunting smaller vertebrates and scavenging carrion when available. Its strong jaws, recurved teeth, and long muscular body would have made it an imposing terrestrial predator; it is one of the oldest known large African monitor lizards.
