Freshwater Scud
Gammarus fasciatus

Freshwater scuds live among leaf litter, stones, and aquatic plants in clean ponds, streams, and lake margins. They crawl and swim on their sides, feeding mainly on decaying plant material, algae, and tiny animal matter. Their flattened bodies and strong legs help them cling to cover and escape sudden currents. A scud’s hard external skeleton must be shed periodically as it grows.
