Testudo changshanensis
Testudo changshanensis

Testudo changshanensis is an extinct tortoise known from Pleistocene fossil material from Changshan in eastern China. It likely occupied warm, seasonally dry woodland and scrub, moving slowly through low vegetation to browse on leaves, grasses, fallen fruit, and other plant matter. Its domed shell provided strong protection, while its stout body and jaws could be used to resist threats or rivals. As with living tortoises, it probably relied on caution, shelter, and armor rather than speed.
