Cygnus equitum Cygnet
Cygnus equitum (cygnet)

This downy cygnet would have stayed close to shallow freshwater margins and sheltered pools. It fed by picking at soft aquatic plants, seeds, and small invertebrates within reach of its bill. Young birds used swimming and hissing displays to avoid danger rather than confronting larger animals. Its rapidly growing body and long neck prepared it for the unusually massive adult form.
