Red Knot Juvenile
Calidris canutus (juvenile)

A juvenile Red Knot has fresh, scaly-looking plumage and begins life on migration routes that can span oceans and continents. It feeds on small mollusks, worms, crustaceans, and insects along mudflats, beaches, and estuaries. Juveniles are still learning the best feeding and resting sites, so they spend much of their time probing wet sand and following tidal flats. Their first migration is especially remarkable because many travel long distances without guidance from adults.
