Western Bumble Bee Pupa
Bombus occidentalis (pupa)

The pupa rests inside a silk cocoon in the protected brood area of the nest. It does not forage or feed, instead transforming stored larval tissues into the wings, legs, hairs, and body form of an adult bee. When disturbed, it can only make small wriggling movements, so its main defense is concealment and its cocoon. A notable fact is that the adult coloration and body parts become visible through the pupal covering as emergence nears.
