European Fire-bellied Toad
Bombina bombina

The adult is a small, semi-aquatic toad of lowland ponds, marshes, ditches, and flooded grasslands across parts of Europe. It hunts insects, worms, and other small invertebrates, often from the water’s edge or floating among vegetation. When disturbed, it arches its body to expose the red-orange belly and releases toxic skin secretions as a chemical defence. Males give soft, repeated calls during the breeding season from shallow water.
