Common Toad
Bufo bufo

Adult common toads are mostly terrestrial amphibians found in woodlands, hedgerows, gardens, meadows, and rough ground, returning to ponds in spring to breed. They walk or make short hops while hunting worms, slugs, beetles, ants, and other invertebrates at dusk and night. When threatened, they crouch, inflate, and rely on toxic secretions from the parotoid glands behind the eyes. They often overwinter in sheltered places such as burrows, compost heaps, or under logs.
