American Red Squirrel Kit
Tamiasciurus hudsonicus (kit)

A kit stays hidden in a grass- and bark-lined nest, usually in a tree cavity or dense branch drey within coniferous or mixed woodland. It begins life dependent on milk and warmth, then gradually samples seeds, buds, and bits of fungi brought near the nest. Young kits are quiet and secretive compared with adults, relying on concealment while their climbing coordination develops. A notable fact is that their eyes open only after several weeks, so early survival depends heavily on the nest site and parental care.
