Speckled Wood Chrysalis
Pararge aegeria (pupa)

The chrysalis hangs attached to low vegetation, usually hidden among grasses in woodland edges, rides, and hedgerows. It does not feed, instead relying on stored energy while the adult body forms inside the pupal case. Its green or brown colouring helps it blend with stems and dead leaves. When disturbed, it can twitch slightly, a simple defence against small predators and parasitoids.
