Snowy Owl Owlet
Bubo scandiacus (owlet)

A Snowy Owl owlet is a downy ground-nesting chick of the Arctic tundra, usually sheltered in a shallow scrape among mosses and low vegetation. It cannot truly fly yet, so it relies on stillness, mottled down, hissing, and parental protection when threatened. Its diet is delivered by adults and consists mostly of small mammals such as lemmings, torn into manageable pieces. A notable fact is that older owlets often leave the nest scrape and scatter across the tundra before they can fly, reducing the chance that one predator finds them all.
