Anise Swallowtail Chrysalis
Papilio zelicaon (pupa)

The chrysalis is usually fixed to a stem, twig, or other firm surface by a silk girdle. It does not feed, instead reorganizing the larval body into the adult butterfly inside a tough pupal case. Its brown or green coloration helps it blend with dry stems or fresh plant growth. In cooler seasons it may remain dormant for months before emerging.
